Eyelash Extension Aftercare

The beauty of eyelash extensions is that they are fairly maintenance free.  The best and only way of lengthening the life of your extensions is to practice proper care.

By using these very simple aftercare instructions you will receive a long lasting result of your eyelash extension set.
  1. Do not get your lashes wet for the first 24 hours. Let the glue adhere perfectly.
  2. “A BIG NO!” to mascara.
  3. ONLY use oil-free eye make-up remover.
  4.  Do not use oil based eye products (including eyeshadow and eyeliner) or cream.
  5. Avoid rubbing your eyes or pulling on your lashes.
  6. Do not use an eyelash curler.
  7. Be careful when sleeping, avoid sleeping on the side of your face.
  8. Cleanse the roots of your natural lashes at least 3-4 times a week to eliminate dust, dirt and bacteria from collecting. Simply use  “Johnson’s Baby No More Tears Shampoo” to make some bubbles.  Use your fingertips to dab bubbles on the eye lash line. Rinse throughly.  Use a towel or a piece of tissue to gently blot them dry. A gentle brush with your lash brush to separate your lashes and you’re done.
  9. We recommend to schedule touch-ups every 2-3 weeks to retain the fluffy look.
  10. Please do not wear eye makeup to your appointments.

THE FACT is washing your eyelash extensions plays an integral role in how long they will last. However, there are so many eyelash technicians out there who recommend to avoid water on the lashes which is totally wrong.

Eyelash industry is a fast growing industry. The adhesive technology have solved so many issues. The new eyelash extensions’ glue is water friendly. Oil is the only ingredient that will break down the bonding quickly.

As an eyelash specialist I will always advise my clients to wash the roots of lashes regularly using a natural soap or baby shampoo. The most common question is ” Am I going to lose more eyelash extensions by washing them?” the answer is “NO”.

The natural oil of your lashes will be removed by washing them regularly. This oil free environment gives you a better long lasting eyelash extension result. In fact, you do not wash the extensions you cleanse the roots of the natural lashes to eliminate any chance of infection. At the same time, by removing the dead eyelid skin the lash roots will breath better and be nourished more. Nourishing your lashes is as important as your hair and skin.

Let me talk about the eyelash growth anatomy briefly to inform you how important is the “washing your lashes” step.

Eyelashes are short and thick hair which length usually does not exceed 15 mm. Overall, the growth of eyelashes is cyclical. Eyelash growth is very quick, it happens about 3-4 weeks after the loss of the old one. Eyelash growth, as well as its further condition depends on the bulbs. The better nourished and healthier the bulb is, the greater the chances of denser hair around the eyes.

We eyelash technicians love your natural lashes more than your extensions as they are the only little base to work on. The health of your natural lashes is the most important. Keep washing and nourishing these precious babies.

Don’t Be The Next Eyelash Extension Victim!

Eyelash Extension Procedure

Ask any two woman about eyelash extensions and most of the time you will get conflicting stories.  One will say she’s in love with them and totally addicted and the other will say she was completely turned off by her first set.  Let’s face it, not all lash technicians are created equal.

There are many factors to consider when deciding to have any beauty techniques performed on you.  Eyelash extensions are no exception. Now a days most salons offer this service but unfortunately many of them have not been trained well, this is why it is so important to make sure you are going to a reputable, educated and trained technician or specialist.  The hours of lash extension training they receive is so precise and detailed by professional and licensed instructors. Not to mention the hours and hours and hours of practice before ever touching a real person.
We’ve all heard the horror stories of lashes falling out in clumps or the lashes that were too long pointing and curling in all directions. What about the stories about eyes glued shut. This is truly happening and it’s time we ladies get educated and find out what to look for in this very popular beauty enhancement.
There are many great ways to research lash extension technicians.  One of my favorites are recommendations from friends, family or the girl you saw with the beautiful lush lashes at the mall.  Don’t be afraid to ask “Who does your gorgeous lashes?”  Word of mouth is an awesome way to connect with talented beauty technicians.
Research websites, read the reviews, look over pictures, read the about us page that usually tells you a lot about the tech and her journey into the beauty industry.  There should be some detailed information about the amount of education and time spent doing the artistry.

Another great way is to ask for a consultation before having your lashes done. Make sure the technician you have chosen is right for you.

Here are 10 very important questions you may want to consider asking:
  1. Where did she do her training?
How long has she been applying lash extensions. It’s not uncommon to find beauty technicians applying lashes without a certificate.  Remember this person is putting adhesive/glue very near to your precious eyes you better be sure they have been trained by an instructor and have enough experience to take clients.
  2. Ask to see pictures of her work.
You shouldn’t see any bonding/glue, if you do it’s too much.  If the lashes are twisted or facing in the wrong direction they have not been applied correctly. If they look clumpy and stuck together in different areas they weren’t isolated or separated properly.
  3. Was she helpful in explaining and choosing the best lash extensions that would compliment your eye shape?
This is so important determining the curl, length and thickness.  The thicker and stronger your natural lashes are the happier they will be to support a thicker/longer lash. I have an extensive collection for you to view to help you decide on your perfect look. Also there is a lash growth cycle that takes place ask about the phases, this will help you understand lash loss.
  4. Did she explain the application process to you?
She should be able to explain the whole lashing process from preparation to application and the most important aftercare instruction.  She must have appropriate knowledge about the ingredients in the adhesive/glue if you ask for it.  If the tech is unable to tell you what’s in the adhesive you better run! Every trained lash artist knows the ingredients.
  5. Did you find her studio tidy and clean?
This is so important.  I had a client tell me she was going to a stylist that was working out of her home, where she had her dog (Boxer) laying on top of her while having her lashes done. What??? This is not professional nor safe or sanitary. Be sure that the working environment is clean.
  6. Ask about sanitation and safety procedures.
There are practices for sanitation, disinfection and sterilization. The beauty tools such as scissors, tweezers, clippers which are in contact with clients skin may cause cross contamination if they are not  sterilized thoroughly.
  7. Research the product line.
Mink lashes are the best by far are and the most expensive.  Synthetic fibre and silk are most popular and affordable.  Your choice will most likely depend on thickness, length, color and curl.  It will also depend on whether you are looking for a natural or more glamorous look.  You are worth the best. Make sure you are paying for high quality products and services.
  8. Ask about allergic reaction possibilities.
Eyelash adhesive/glue does not generally irritate eyes, allergic reactions are possible what you can expect is itchiness, tenderness, redness and or swelling. If you had the symptoms, you should consider having them removed as soon as possible.  Also allergic reactions can be caused by primers, tapes, cleansers. A patch test can be performed to avoid a potential reaction.
  9. Make sure you have received aftercare advice before leaving the salon.
If she tells you not to put water on them at all, run!!  Lash after-care is so important as you want to take care of your new investment.  Too many artists will tell their clients not to wet or cleanse their lovely new lashes, and this is totally false.  Take that advice as another warning sign.  The advice you should be getting is to cleanse your lashes often (3 times a week) if not daily if you are applying makeup. Avoid bacteria and residue by keeping your lashes fresh and clean. Also it is very important to stay clear of all oils and oil based products near your lashes.  Don’t forget to brush gently and regularly.
  10. Will my natural eyelashes weaken by getting lash extensions?
The answer is no, your natural lashes will maintain their normal strength as long as you don’t pull, prod, or irritate them. Your extensions will grow out with your natural lashes and fall out on their own. Your lash extensions could be compromised if your are pulling, picking or pinching them. Also if you expose them to water too soon shortly after your appointment including crying or sweating in the gym you could lose a few.  The adhesive glue is strong but it’s not crazy glue.
I am an expert in customizing lash looks with precision and skill while achieving great results while keeping your natural lashes healthy.  I’ve had clients come in with severe damage to their natural eyelashes, infections, allergic reactions and many voicing their botched lash extension experiences.  It is my hope that the information in this blog will help ladies to research and find a professional, trained, eye lash extension artist. Visit me at Tango Salon in downtown Victoria, I would love for you to experience me and allow me to create the most glamourous look for you.

Freshen Up Your Self-Care With Our Precious Wellness Tips

As a beauty technician we’ll spend countless hours looking after our clients. It is extremely important we take care of ourselves first. It doesn’t matter if you’re a hairdresser, makeup artist, eyelash technician or an aesthetician, most of the time we’ll do repetitive movements with poor body posture for hours.

With so much complexity in our daily work lives, it’s sometimes hard to remember what you need to do to stay on track with your wellness. If you do not have certain mobility in your thoracic spine, you will struggle with discomfort and pain soon.  Especially after spending long hours sitting or standing in a leaning forward position, you may experience tight shoulders, upper and lower back pain, hand, wrist and or neck strain.

As an eyelash specialist I used to suffer from a very bad neck and shoulder tenderness. It was hard to sit, walk or even sleep. I was exhausted with the pain and accepted the intolerable soreness as part of my work life. I found out that so many beauty technicians had to quit their job because of their body failure. I didn’t want to lose my job but more importantly my health. I needed a change and I did it.

Here are some great self-care tips that you can implement into your daily routine to ensure your posture and your artistry business are not affected.

  • Stretch and walk between appointments. Most of the time we get distracted by checking our phone or especially social media instead of doing some movement exercises on our breaks. Forget about what is happening out there. Focus on your body health, profession and success while you are in the workplace.
  • Always pay attention to your posture and positioning. Avoid bending your neck or back while sitting. Keep your core tight while standing.  Avoid relaxing your stomach as much as possible. Your body posture will change gradually over time causing lots of unwanted discomforts.
  • Exercise regularly, take a yoga or pilates class on your days off, both improve health, flexibility and build muscle strength. Protect your posture, prevent cartilage and joint breakdown. Protect your spine. Better your bone health. Increase your blood flow. Drain your lymphs and boost immunity. All can be achieved by exercising.
  • Purchase a good foam roller to release muscle tightness or trigger points. Roll on the foam 10 minutes a day. It will give a reverse curve to the spine to prevent spine curvature disorders. This simple movement delivers magical results. Trust me.
  • Invest in a deep tissue back, neck and shoulder massage monthly. “You’re worth it!” “You will love it!”
  • Soothe your body by soaking in a hot epsom salt bath.  There are numerous health benefits of epsom salt, take stress-relieving baths atleast 3 times a week. It’s relaxing and tension releasing.
  • Open up your chest by door frame stretching exercises which can help reduce tension and pain in your neck, shoulders and back.

Maybe you’ve been meaning to start but just haven’t found the right exercise routine. Once you begin being proactive about your health and wellness, you’ll soon find that your body and mind feel much more relaxed and energized.  A healthy body and mind is essential if you want to lead a truly successful life.

“When you’re loving yourself and putting yourself first, everything in your life benefits.”
